From Gentoo Linux Wiki
Hey, just read your suggestions on my talk page... sorry for the lae response; been very busy moving house.
let me go through you're idea by number :)
- this sounds like a great idea, I dont think we need to be as specific as saying "Gentoo Wiki Users", as thats somewhat redundant by the subject of this wiki. something like "Wiki Editors 500" or something would be fine, i'll let you use your best judgement
- Feel free to ctegorize and sub categorize as many pages as you see fit; this is one section of the wiki that is often neglected I keep trying to work on it but always get distracted by something else :/ .... oh shinny...
- A top level category sounds great; toss me a message if you start one and i will replace the categories link on the left with it.
- because of the "smallness" of this wiki, discussions dont really happen much on this wiki.. to do a discussion i suggest you do it on the user mailing list; you are much more likely to get someone's attention that way.
- this might also be a good idea, but once again not a whole lot of regular editors on this wiki, and most pages that are candidates for deletion have fairly obvious reasons (that's just the nature of this form of wiki)
Also, feel free to "be bold" not enough editors on this wiki are; we need more of that.
Feel free to make any other suggestions that you feel are too big to just go ahead and do on the mailing list, i'm sure there are people willing to help you out. -- Thrasher 15:50, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Page Caching
This wiki is behind a squid proxy, so the caching behaviour might be more aggressive than on wikipedia. All you usually have to do to update the page, is add?action=purgeto the end of the user page URL and the cache will be cleared. Welcome to the wiki, btw. Thanks for helping out! -Tro 02:22, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Interwiki links
The current list is here. It's just a db export right now, but I think it's fairly straightforward to see which interwiki link goes where. Tell me if you need a prettier format. I'll need to format it and post it somewhere on the wiki anyway, I guess. -TRO talkcontribs 19:39, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Not linking to non-existent pages
I agree with you in a certain way but as you say, these pages can be just redirects to existing articles but I think this is not really necessary since we can use the category system for this approach. Nearly all of your links have something to do with applications but we already have some pages with application lists. I do not understand why we need those index-pages even though we can use categories. Categories are more flexible since they are generated automatically - those lists need to be maintained manually. Another reason to use categories is that these links look ugly. I think we should work on styling conventions and restructuring the wiki rather than creating needless pages: Everyone uses different templates. While some people are using the prefix "#" for their commands, others are using the code box template. Concerning the structure, there are pages that have the prefix "HARDWARE" or "HOWTO" but if you look at the "Recent changes" page, you'll see that it is still being used for new pages.
So, what do you think? Can I re-apply my changes?
