[edit] Welcome
Welcome to this page which contains some background information about me. I personally don't look at the personal pages of other users (often) so if this page isn't much help then I messed up again. But I hope it will contain some usefull information.
[edit] My Computer Intrest
Yes playing around with computers is one of my hobbies :P I also like to pretend (like all the other computer freaks) that I have other hobbies (like Judo, Beer, Motorbikes etc) but I must admit computers takes most of my money. I don't work (yet) in the computer business because I still study astrophysics. To give you an impression of what I do with computers I have made a list of things I do on my computer :
- Computer Play toys :
- Programming (When I need to impress people I use "Software Development")
- Mostly in Java (Servlets, JDBC, mostly avoiding a GUI :P)
- Sometimes in C (for extensive calculations/simulations)
- When I was just a little boy ... (GW)-Basic and Turbo Pascal
- Can read other languages too but don't use them myself
- Scripting Languages (Don't enjoy it much ... But there is really no escape)
- (X)HTML (Still looking for a woman who can help me out :P)
- Javascript (I use the 1.5 standard)
- CSS (to make the webpage development complete :P)
- Shell Scripting
- Hosting Games over the internet for my friends (not always legitimately :P)
- Playing strategy and (online)RPGs
- Hosting / Organise / Help to organise LAN parties
- Provide Download service (FTP, SFTP, DC++, curently working on a bittorents tracker for LAN Party use)
- Hosting my own domains (apache working together with tomcat, postgresql (had more than enough of mysql) and zimbra (mail server))
- Crunching with Seti currently running on the BOINC platform
- Software / Hardware RAID systems (0/1/5 curently playing with the software RAID capabilities of the linux kernel)
- Building my own Computers (Buy the hardware I need and putting it together ... For optimal Performance)
- Fixing PC's of relatives and friends (When provided enough Beer ofcourse :P)
- Games Development (currently reading "Designing Virtual Worlds" by Richard A. Bartle)
- Chatting with relatives and friends on IRC, MSN, ICQ, Ventilo and TeamSpeak
- Providing Tutorials for things I tested or have done (in the hope people would do the same ...)
- Programming (When I need to impress people I use "Software Development")
Currently out of ideas but with this long list it wouldn't come to much of a surplrise that my pc's are online day and night :P
[edit] Me
Well as soon as I find a decent picture of me I will upload it. It seems that every photo taken of me is a silly one or I just always manage to mess it up. But here is some other info:
- name Roland de Rooij
- Gender Male
- alias Douwe Querty
- Country The Netherlands
- City Hilversum (Media City of the Netherlands)
- email me@douwequerty.com (Yes my own mail server is up and running)
- Other Intrest Judo (I teach too), Motorbikes (fixing them myself too), Beer (which student doesn't :P), Science (physics, astrophysics, biology and general) and Politics (member of the PvdA).
- Games Civilisation, Rome Total War, NeverWinter Nights, Guildwars, World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, C&C Generals (just some games I like to play in no particular order)
[edit] My Gentoo Server
Yes my personal webserver is running gentoo ... I have experimented with different distro's (debian, redhat, fedora, SOL and unbuntu) but gentoo was the only linux distribution that I could make do everything I wanted and was highly configurable. It seems that my ideas about linux configuration were either uncommon or just not supported. However I think my config wasn't that uncommon judge for yourself :
Hardware :
- Dual 2.8 GHz Xeon (with HT)
- 2 Gb ECC memory
- 2 36 Gb U320 SCSI Discs (in software mirror)
- 1 160 Gb IDE disk (for backups)
- SCSI U160 Hardware Raid Device (For future space expansion)
- CDROM drive and floppy drive
Software and Configuration :
- Operating system : Gentoo Linux
- Disc/partition : 2 * 36 Gb SCSI in software RAID (mdadm)
- For data/config/log dirs --> in a lvm2 group (for easy maintenance : Writable snapshots for backups, easy partition size changes and easy increased size disk replacements)
- Email : Zimbra in a unbuntu chroot (zimbra is a complete email suite with calender etc... open source with full AJAX interface!)
- Webservice : Apache with adds
- Linked to tomcat with mod_jk (I prefer servlets to php or perl)
- Linked to zimbra with mod_proxy
- mediawiki as wiki (connected to postgresql)
- Database : postgresql
- With Database-connectionpool Proxool
- FTP : PureFTPd (proftpd had HUGE security holes in the past)
- Linked to postgresql with editted version of User manager for PureFTPd
- DNS Service : Bind (chrooted for security reasons)
- Firewall : iptables
- Maintenace tools
- Webmin for general administration tasks
- Editted version of PretendUpdateScript to be informed about possible system updates for gentoo
- Editted version of UpdateScript for lazy gentoo update
- Chrony for time/date synchronization
- ssh ofcourse for remote access
Some other common packages like : samba, denyhosts, tetex, gnuplot, svn, netplug etc.
