[edit] Setting Up Media Keys

I have a logitech Media keyboard and i've managed to setup my media keys so they work in xmms. Its taken awhile to get working due to weird wiki layouts and really strange command strings in amixer.

Firstly setup /home/user/.Xmodmap and enter the keycodes for your keys. These can be found by using xev and is covered in this HOWTO Use Multimedia Keys.

keycode 162 = xmms -r keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext

keycode 223 = XF86ScreenSaver

As you can see, i've used both a native xmms command, and shortcuts build into X.

Once these are done you add them into XFCE4's keyboard editing suite.

On the left you enter the command you would like it to run (Not the name of the above shortcut). On the right, you press the KEY that the command on the left corrisponds to.

I.E. if you typed xmms -s (stop) in the command field, you would press your STOP key on your keyboard.

[edit] Interests

My interests range greatly, while still remaining computer related. I tend to read a lot of books, mostly fiction which have computers as their main theses. Lately I have been reading Dan Brown’s “Digital Fortress” which involves an unbreakable encryption algorithm. Also I read a lot of websites which provide both computer, and other forms of news such as Slashdot, or www.theregister.co.uk. Also in my free time I like to draw, this is something I have done all through my education and I find it helps me concentrate upon problems which I might find arise. However I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist with my artwork and am not usually pleased with the outcome.

[edit] Aims

One of my main aims is to hopefully get a job. The biggest problem is finding a job which will fit me well. Currently, like many students, I’m not quite sure what I want to do, but I do know that it will end up involving computers. Computers and people, the combination of how different people react to computers has always amazed me, as has the way which a computer can help someone, if only they are shown how to not be afraid of it. I want to improve upon what I have already; I wish to work more with Linux, in a production environment as well as using it at home. Also I wish to learn more, to embrace new ways of tackling problems.
