[edit] Overview
A category is a grouping of related articles. This article details the use of categories and their administration in regards to this wiki.
[edit] The Category Namespace
The Category namespace is where all categories reside. The top portion of pages in the Category namespace can be edited like any other, but the bottom half is automatically generated list of pages in the category in alphabetical order.
[edit] The Category Hierarchy
This week uses a hierarchy for categories. This is created by placing a category in one or more other categories. Using this method, all categories should be accessible from Category:Browse categories.
[edit] Assigning Articles to Categories
An article may be in one or more categories. You can add an article to a category tag to the page:
[[Category:Category Name]]
Categories are traditionally placed at the very top of the page.
[edit] Linking to Categories
Linking to categories requires special syntax. You can link to a category like this:
[[:Category:Category Name]]
[edit] Naming Conventions
In addition to the general page naming conventions, the following conventions also apply to catgeory naming:
- Use normal (sentence) case - For example: Browse categories instead of Browse Categories
- Use pluralization - For example: Printers instead of Printer
- Avoid unnecessary abbreviations - For example: Architectures instead of Archs
[edit] Redirecting Categories
Category redirection should only be used where category names have been changed. To redirect a category, use Template:Catredir. For example, to redirect a category to New category:
{{Catredir|New category}}
