Thanks I followed your advice and it worked under Suse 10.2 as well

For me it was not ~/.gtkrc-2.0 but ~/.gnome2/gtkrc-2.0 (I have Gentoo, evolution 2.12.2, and KDE4). But your tip told me what to look for in the strace output. Thanks!
