has anyone else noticed that this trick doesn't work if you are accessing gdm/kdm via VNC? You still get the grey crosshatch background.

This doesn't happen in Fedora - they do have a black background.

Anyone know how to do this?

Have you changed the settings both on the server and (probably more important) on the client?

Is it possible to set the black to an image?
