Ok.. I followed the instructions and after make oldconfig, I never get a chance to respond. The system just takes the default for all the options and gives me back a Linux prompt.

You indicated I would get a chance to respond and set my configuration with that command. This was not the case.

It will only prompt you for changes if there are new modules not in the version from which your .config file came. That generally means that you won't be prompted when doing upgrades where only the -r number on the package has changed.
