Since KDE 3.5 you'll be asked if you insert a audio cd what you want to do, one of the options is to "Extract and encode audio tracks" which starts KAudioCreator, another in my eyes even simpler approach is to open the disc with the konqueror. KDE will then use the auidocd kio slave to show you a virtual root directory of the cd, which contains the tracks as wav's and folders like "ogg", "mp3", "flac" and even one containing the whole disc in one file in the mentioned formats. The actual ripping and encoding is done one the fly if you select some files or folders and copy them on the disc. The settings for the encoders can be found in KDE's control center under "Sound & Multimedia -> Audio CDs".

I'm a bit afraid that my english is not good enough to edit the article, and am not used to the wiki page markup language, so it would be nice if a more experienced user would incorporate this into the article.
