My modifications worked for me, but aren't that great.

The xbox linux project fixed the problem of axis->joypad mapping in a much more elegant way. That code is available in the CVS repository for the xbox-linux project (which, as I write this, seems to be down)

The instructions from the HOWTO don't work for the later kernels. However, someone made modules: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2508490

I started a userspace driver using libusb, its available at:

http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/xboxdrv/

Might be easier to get working then the kernel stuff for some people.
