[edit] About this howto
This howto will guide you through setting up Samba as a client and/or server. But don't be scared, it is quite easy to do :)
I have added some extra information here to allow you to restrict your shares to certain users on your network. I will be tweaking them as I learn more and verify my configuration. For your reference, most of the information came from the general installation guide over at samba.org. --Skeezer65134 05:33, 27 June 2005 (GMT)
I found a faster + smaller way to install Samba. Helps if you know your way around a little. Great for those who won't use xwindows on their Linux box at all. e.g. Fileserver for M$ Windoze machines. -Turbomaniac_7

"It does not really matter where as long as its an empty folder". Isn't it possible to mount something over a folder with files in, and it just hides the current files till you unmount?
Of course it is possible. I've done it myself a couple of times. It is nice to find after few months some lost files under automaticaly mounted directory...
smitty1e, 12Aug06: Great reference material. A possible improvement might be to discuss a dual-boot use-case where we have:
G) a set of Linux partitions with Gentoo installed,
W) where we have LoseXP installed, and
D) a FAT32 partition called D:\ under LoseXP and /mnt/dmz under Gentoo.
What we want is to have a slice of D mounted as /home for the user account when booted from G, and still expose D to LoseXP under VMWare/Samba as D:\, when booting W as a raw-partition VMWare guest.
Presumably, there would be a separate USB network interface for W under VMWare.
The point of Samba in this use-case is to de-conflict access to D, so that G and W don't clobber files and b0rk D. I'll let you know how my investigation proceeds. Distant screams indicate difficulties. ;) Media:Example.ogg
[edit] Troubleshooting
[edit] starting samba daemon takes too long
Possible cause: incorrect setup of CUPS - check your /etc/cups/client.conf file. Make sure that the ServerName setting is working properly; otherwise, comment it and try again.
[edit] Access to Samba share from Windows
Hi.
In my opinion it should be mentioned in the text how to access a Samba share from Windows ("\\LINUXBOX" from a browser or as command). I had to google this information. What do you think about this?
