Talk:HOWTO Manipulate (move, resize) hard disk partitions
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
- howabout a section for downsizing the empty space of a partition as a partition of its own? Would be nifty for installs..
- what about making a partition smaller..?
- I think that it should be possible to finish the "logical extension" section using LVM. Does someone know how to do this? -AlecTavi
[edit] why bother
if you do create a backup, then you can delete the partition, then you create a bigger one, then copy the data back :)
[edit] Because
Depending on the data size and backup media used it can take many times longer to restore the datas ;) Tried on a Raid 5 array extended from 560 Go to 840 Go it took around two hours ( filesystem extension, the raid extension took 24 Hours :p ). The backup time of this array (for a complete backup, not incremental) is around 30 Hours (weekend backups) and a restore should take approximatively the same time as we were not using compression on the tape library.
