[edit] Changes 2007-10-06

I made some layout changes and also removed some changes added by 86.57.56.21 and by a bot.

First of all, if you download the correct stage3, in many cases there should be no need to change CFLAGS. Furthermore, if you change CHOST in a stage3 install, you may break your system (the file warns about this, and so does /etc/make.conf.example). So I'm pretty sure the remarks about Gentoo using the 486 compiler by default is wrong -- the writer probably downloaded the wrong stage file. I never had problems with unchanged CFLAGS, and correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can always change your CFLAGS and do an emerge world.

Secondly, this page is meant to be a quick-reference so the steps are just to remind readers of where edits need to be made; the readers are expected to know WHAT to edit and HOW, as soon as they are reminded WHERE. So I don't think it's necessary to put detailed examples of lines that (in many cases) don't even need to be changed, such as CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS.

Thirdly, the link to Safe Cflags that was changed by the bot was in a block:file so it didn't get translated by the wiki engine. Also, again, the page was written for people who know what they're doing. Links to further information have a better place on the Talk page in this case.

[edit] Changes 2008-04-29

I undid change 129841 by 69.31.133.16. The extra comma in the umount command is not a mistake: the command umount /mnt/gentoo/{boot,dev,proc,} expands to umount /mnt/gentoo/boot /mnt/gentoo/dev /mnt/gentoo/proc /mnt/gentoo
