[edit] Precompiled image?
would it be possible to post a generic bootable image for a usb key? seems like this would be a fairly generic image that many could use w/o going through the compilation process.
sorry for being so lazy :)
[edit] Replace the stick with a Harddrive I installed gentoo on
I have harddrive with gentoo on it.. I am planning to move it to a USB case and use (sd0,0) and /dev/sda* in my grub and fstab respectively to boot from it. Of course once I have made sure my bios can boot from USB.
[edit] You could start trying this
I don't want to promote in any possible way, but hey, you're asking for it. Look at http://knopperdisk.knopper.tk There's an usb version which is based on Gentoo, you could try it...;) You need at least a 64mb usb stick.
[edit] Outdated?
Hi,
I'm curious about the status of this document, since I try to build a customized bootable CD but it's a bit a pain-in-the-a. to get cloop running on a 2.6.x-box and busybox (which is currently with version 1.00-rc3 in portage) stopps the whole process by opening its own menuconfig in the background.
Answer: Catalyst is supposed to be the newer way to make LiveCDs. I think there's a stub here and a more complete set of howtos in the forums and in the gentoo docs/catalyst page.
[edit] VFAT vs JFS
I haven't run thru the docs yet, but perhaps users should consider jfs insted of vfat. jfs works much better with flash rom, it doesn't write over the same area again and again like vfat does. (the memory blocks used in usb sticks wear out if over-written too many times)
- Surely you meant JFFS ?
[edit] Too informal?
I don't know if the point was to be cute, but saying things like "clear out all the crap" is unprofessional. I'm going to clean this up a bit. If anyone has any complaints, feel free to revert it, or flame me at alc6379@comcast.net --Alex Cavnar
