I got this to work, mplayer plays movies fine, although it's not centred or the right size, but thats probably in the settings.
The only problem I had with this was changing vts while mplayer was going caused mplayer to write over the new vt (Maybe because mplayer opens the fb, but doesn't get told to stop when a new vt is selected?). After switching back and closing mplayer it is fine.
I've got it running by issuing the following command mplayer -vo vesa [filename]
You can also put vesa into /etc/mplayer.conf vo=vesa

Works fine. Use -vo devfb or -vo devfb2. Also there is very good description for this in Russian at http://www.linuxrsp.ru/artic/console-graphics.html.

I heard that this method only worked with a 2.6.5 or older kernel, is this true ?

I tried it with the standard 2.6.7 but "bootsplash_patch" failed

bootsplash is no longer supported on newer kernels > 2.6.5. Look at Fbsplash for a replacement.
That would be the official patches from Spock, you can get patches from bootsplash.de.

I'm looking forward to know which mode code is the one for 1280x800 lcd panels :(

I have a dell inspiron 8500 (never buy from dell home btw, they ignored my warranty on the dead harddrive because it wasn't running windows... go figure) and I can't get mode 352 to work.

I've followed everything allthough some things have changed for grub.conf, and it seems that framebuffer is working as my console is a lot smaller then before,but no bootsplash image.
Also, does anybody have an idea on how to set it up for a widescreen, 1680x1050 resolution?
Me have the same problem, Im having a Dell Inspiron 510M and the bootsplash does not appear, anybody can tell me why?

Hi, I absolutely need to use an initrd ramdisk generated by genkernel. I see that this howto creates a new ramdisk. How do I go about using a bootsplash with this ramdisk generated by genkernel?

Mplayer Workerd out of the box on the framebuffer after i activated the USE flags:
fb => s/w, but okay
directfb => the video i played was displayed for times, but okay
svga => best result, i can't see differences to X
