Talk:Fax
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
Hi! tried your howto, seems nice, but i still don't have it working.
The reason might be, i can't chmod 666 /dev/modem, it always sticks with lr-xr-xr-x. The original /dev/tts/1 is crw-rw-rw.
I am sure i was able to change other linked devices on my computers before, don't know why not this one. I didn't dig myself deep enough into the /usr/lib/cups/backend/efax script, but i will see to change to the original device there.
Another thing i came across is, the entry in /etc/printcap gets overwritten on every cups restart. I tried hylafax but that has problems too, the same i think. The only programs i can use my card with is ivcall and ivam2.
I found another nice fax method on the hylafax homepage, it is called SambaFax, i will try this too, maybe i can add to your howto --the_mgt 16:41, 14 August 2005 (GMT)
[edit] Troubleshooting
Permission on the device will be defined via udev rules and inclusion in the uucp group. I did have an issue with it, but solved.
- Another issue
A cell phone Motorola Z6 connected via usb cable as a modem.
From minicom, or with fax/efax i'm able to dial, however, as soon as other end picking up a call, my phone/modem hang up on it and complaining "NO CARRIER"
My assuption, that a init string for the modem should be twicked - to prolong duration of the handshake? perhaps. :.Dmitri
