I cannot see the /dev/input/eventZ

when that should appear? after starting lircd?

I'm using debian & kernel 2.6.16.19, lirc 8.1


I see you were using cx88 driver...

As far as I can see the configuration of the remote control has changed in newer versions of the kernel, as they are treated as normal keyboards by the input layer of the kernel itself. So lircd isn't needed anymore, and inputlircd instead does the job for translating the key events for lirc clients.
