Talk:HP Compaq 6710b
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
Just a short comment about the overheating of the CPU. This summer when i was in Singapore (Tropical climate) the heat of the CPU rise up to 70°C (almost 80)... So it resist well! ;-)

Hi everybody,
I'm owner of a HP 6710s notebook which is quite similar. There is only a little less hardware build-in. Would you mind extending the wiki entry for this model? I am asking because I was thinking to extend the article with a part about gensplash/framebuffer installation.
Another interesting part would be bluetooth remote related. Did somebody successfully install something like that? I would like to use it for presentations.
Greetings, dk
Sure! Just redirect (cut/paste) everything (if you know how, I don't) to HARDWARE HP Compaq 6710 and we are done ;)

Hi. I'm working at a software company, and we have bought 3 of these and equipped them with gentoo. Two 32 bit systems, one 64 bit. The two 32 bit instalations face a problem with ACPI. When any ACPI modules are loaded or compiled into the kernel, the Xserver won't start. The sollution is not having any acpi turned on, which is difficult for a laptop -- you cant speedstep the processor nor know when the battery will die. Did anyone of you readers and 6710b owners come across such an issue? All 3 systems use 2.6.22-suspend2 sources, recent stable xorg-x11 and 2.1.0 intel video driver, but only the 32 bit ones face the issue.

Great! As it means it's about Time for me to finally install suspend2 the 2.6.22nd ;) and we will see! :)
BTW, why are you guys using the still testing 2.6.22 kernel? Is the gentoo system also testing (ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86")? I am using stable Gentoo with as well stable gentoo-sources-2.6.21-r4 and everything's fine. You could try suspend2 that of 2.6.21 as well.. (although now the stable one is still only the 2.6.20-r6, but you wouldn't try a 20th for the barbecue problem, so try suspend2-sources-2.6.21-r6 first if I am too slow here testing ;))
And are the .config files also pre-installed for this specific laptop 6710b, or are they generic?
And what about your fan noises? Did you finally got them from a `silent' series? :) (http://flyerman.org)

Hi. I'm using 2.6.22, because DRI didn't want to work with 2.6.21 and 2.6.20 kernel modules. The fan is controlled by the bios in my situation, so if the laptop gets hotter it powers on automaticaly, since i don't have ANY acpi modules loaded, as they make my X dead. Two of us work in other town, so i would have to go to them and check if their laptops act more quiet -- my fan is rather noisy, but when i step it down (using cpufreq-speedstep module and cpufreq_select) using "ondemand" govenor, it hardly ever powers on and the lappy is nice and cool. We all bought laptops from different suppliers, so i guess it's very possible that each one is from a different series.
We don't have ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" in out make.confs ;) that would be a clear suicide ;) Only kernels and some other software packages. We also made our .configs by ourselves, so each one is different.

Ok, well, then you can call me a kamikazee for the last 2 years :D since I installed my first linux on my [now] old HP Pavillion dv4000 with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS ~x86 :)) good that now with the new one I can calm down onto stable system and still play around with all testing software on the old one nearby :))
Great news, then I'm jumping straight onto suspend2-2.6.22 to have my nice DRI and move onto Beryl+Water, ehehey, as even without DRI I get >1100 FPS, looks promising :)
Stand by!

My gentoo is about 4 years old, and have survived 2 laptops so far, 6710b is the 3rd one (had ibms 600x and x31 before). Each time i copy the whole system and just reconfigure the hardware dependent stuff and go on. You can always select unstable packages by adding them to /etc/portage/package.keywords or /etc/portage/package.keywords/somefile - just read the gentoo handbook ;).
You've mentioned on flyerman.org that there have been reports from Poland, that 6710b's sold there are noisy. Well I'm from PL and confirm.
The XGL/beryl/compiz stuff works nice on 6710b and x3100 delivers sufficient power for that. But don't expect blazing gaming performance. ET works SO-SO at best and does not support wide screen resolutions.

Ok, just returned from hibernated suspend2-sources-2.6.22, no problems, xorg-x11-7.2 works fine. And DRI now works (yay!), but gives only ~850-900 FPS :/ (although the view of turning gears is smooth -- different from that of without DRI (i thought previouse was too fast, as 1100 FPS gives you frame jump :D, I was wrong) -- and the system is of somewhat slows down from time to time (the graphics output). Cannot figure the pattern though.
Here's my .config for you to try:

Regarding your post: well, I know about package.keywords et al, it's just that I simply cannot resist from waiting for freshest packages (anykind, from GNOME to udev :)) to become stable, I like enjoying those new visible features those of gnome 2.18 or invisible others and have them now, as well as having bugs or borked systems, but that's when I go to bugreport or forums.. :) I even compile Mozilla thunderbird/FFox from CVS, as cannot wait until the feature hit the release line :)
I will not play games, as I bought with Santa Rosa mainly for Linux reviving, but there is one game after when I complete it I will delete vista partition :) is Thief 3: Deadly Shadows, game of my life, and then -- no games further, except for classical oldies in lan parties :)
I am from Lithuania, so, hello, neighbour :)

From your .config i see that you have everything acpi-like compiled in.... well maybe i have to recompile some stuff to get it working. Glad to hear that its doable. Well... i use my laptop to work, so no unstable adventures for me :) so i don't overuse ~x86.
Oh by the way... what do you want to do with bluetooth? Just emerge net-wireless/bluez-utils and start /etc/init.d/bluetooth and the thing will work. That gives you the possibility to make serial ports over bluetooth with your cell phone. If you want to use GPRS, remember to have PPP modules and pppd or wvdial and find a good howto on getting your cellphone to work.
hello to you to, neighbour ;)
qubix
Hi, I installed a 32bit Gentoo on my HP 6710s. So far I didn't have any problems at all. Everything is working with gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r1, xorg-x11-7.2 and latest graphics drivers. Is suspend to disk working with suspend2-sources? Interesting could be to get the bluetooth remote to work. And what about compiz-fusion. Is somebody using it? Greetings, david
[edit] To qubix
Maybe you can just try to compile your whole kernel with my config, see, if it works (should..) and then to do diff? ;)
It's not me, looks like it's david (Stormkings) is interested in this Bluetooth _Remote_ thing.

[edit] To david (Stormkings)
Huge thanks for the framebuffer :) Although I've just come to thinking, that I will barely use framebuffer/splash, as, yes, the suspend2-sources-2.6.22 work perfectly fine.
No, I did not try compiz-fusion but I will at least google about it now :)

[edit] How hot is your processor?
Hello. I'm owner of 6710s model with t7300 processor (2GHz), during normal work the /proc/acpi/thermal_zones/TZ5/state shows only 50C and when I'm compiling sth small (like kernel) it shows 65C. However when i start to compile bigger packages like gcc the temperature increase to 80C! I'm pretty aware, have you got same temperatures or less?
Hi. When my processor is idle it always shows 50C. I don't know if you can trust this. The other stats show: TZ0:45C TZ1:39C TZ3:36c TZ4:16C TZ5:50C. I am using the "coretemp" module (/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0|hwmon1/device/temp1_input). When idle it shows about 40C and on load it goes up to 70C.
[edit] About temperature
CPU temperature of 80 C is ok, see http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2_Duo_%28Merom%29 (Core 2 Duo Merom handles up to 100 C, 125 C is meltdown). My CPU goes to 80 C when compiling larger stuff, too.

[edit] Barbecue issue
Hi, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it, but add kernel's parameter acpi=off during installation solve the problem too

[edit] Console restoring after suspend-to-RAM
As others have already mentioned, suspend works fine with the suspend-sources. I noticed that after suspend to RAM and waking up the text console is in unusable state (with both powersave and hibernate-ram). The solution is (in the console):
vbetool vbemode set 3
The console works since then, just in order to see something, issue a command, like ls code> (only newly drawn characters will be visible). Also note that this will only work for text-only consoles (no framebuffer), since mode 3 is the standard text mode.
Or you can add to /etc/hibernate/ram.conf:
OnResume 10 chvt 1; sudo vbetool vbemode set 3; chvt 7
The last example switches to first console, changes the mode, and switches to console 7 (X). Note that you have to set the right permissions for vbetool in /etc/sudoers for this.
[edit] Minor issue with powersave/kpowersave
When suspending to RAM from X with (k)powersave, it will wake up correctly, but the backlight is off (you can barely see the windows). It is enough to switch to console 1 and back to X (Ctrl+Alt+F1, Alt+F7) or the equivalent chvt 1; chvt 7 code> and the backlight comes back on. The script hibernate-ram code> restores the backlight correctly.

[edit] Xinerama/dual-head issue (how to get this working?)
If anyone was able to get multihead working (monitor with notebook LCD screen), please post your config here (or in the wiki). I've spent about two days trying to make it work, but nothing helped. Classic Xinerama/dual-head configs (like the ones mentioned in http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Graphics_Media_Accelerator_X3100) don't work because of a bug in X.org that won't be fixed (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/119967). I couldn't get it to work via xrandr either (xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS does not add the new screen even if Virtual is correctly set), e.g. with config like this (http://www.abclinuxu.cz/forum/show/186678#11), even though it works for other people with X3100. MergedFB is not supported by the new driver either, so I am kind of out of options. XrandR does not seem to be working almost at all except for the most basic stuff like xrandr -s WIDxHGT (I have latest xorg-server-1.3.0.0, xorg-x11-7.2 and latest drivers xf86-video-i810-2.1.1).
--abyssal
It was caused by buggy driver x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810-2.1.1, use 2.1.0, see updated wiki page for config etc.

[edit] Problems with suspend2-kernel-2.6.22-r1
Hello! I'm trying to compile this kernel for my 6710s machine, unfortunatelly always after boot i get blank screen. 2.6.21 works fine for me, but using config from .21 doesn't. Could somebody post working configuration. Big thanks!
[edit] Suspend to disk freezes
Hey, i'm trying to configure suspend to disk with suspend2, although suspend to ram (sleep) works perfectly (with some hacks like using dummy xserver or unloading wifi-card mudules) i can't hibernate my machine. Everything freezes at 'doing atomic copy'. Does anyone have working hibernation? Or maybe has same problem, thanks radious
[edit] Kernel 2.6.23
Hi, I'm using Gentoo sources 2.6.23 for a while now and compared to version 2.6.22-r8 I would consider it bad quality in some parts. For example my notebook freezes almost every time I close the lid. No log entries just a black screen. The brightness control buttons doesn't work any more but to be fair it's possible now to control it with kpowersave. Udev hangs on boot for a while probably because it's trying to rename the wlan device. And it would really interest me to get a working Howto for using uvesafb as well as working solution for the compiz-fusion blacklist issue. Thank for any hint, dk
[edit] About Kernel 2.6.23
Could you please check if
# echo 1 > /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS
fixes the problem with lid close for you.
Under Debian I had to delete
/etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules
and restart the system for udev rename to work properly.
-- Thanks for the reply. I tried the first thing and don't see any problems here. So I guess it fixes it. I would rather not delete the persistent-net.rule cause it contains a rule that renames my device, and I want it to be renamed. :) It's not that I can't use the wireless device but I think the bug is responsible for the long waiting time during the boot process.
-- The file /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules is recreated on reboot with the correct values. If you prefer just rename it and reboot.
-- Thanks, problem solved. Btw. I found out that "udevtrigger" does the same without rebooting.
[edit] Not working hardware with linux
There are a few things I couldn't make to work with linux.
[edit] I. HP 3D DriveGuard
I cannot find any information if this is supported on linux
[edit] II. Backlight control [Solved, or not quite]
With kernel 2.6.24 and latest xorg xserver core git snapshot brightness buttons work again. Mplayer resets the brightness to the level it was when xorg started, unless using:
$ xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL combination
I still have some trouble with this backlight control. Hope that it will be solved in time.
[edit] Bluetooth issue
There is a problem on 6710b with enabling bluetooth. I tried on many kernels (2.6.19, 2.6.22, 2.6.23, 2.6.24 with no luck, compiled with RFKILL (CONFIG_RFKILL) as module and static) and many distributions (ubuntu 7.10, gentoo 2007.0, opensuse 10.3). I don't know if it is a kernel bug, or a hardware issue, but if you disable (switch off) wireless connections (wifi and bluetooth) under Windows Vista, you won't enable bluetooth under linux until you restore bios to default settings (or maybe until you enable it back in Windows Vista, i didn't try). I found solution here: http://www.flamingspork.com/blog/2008/01/11/enabling-bluetooth-on-a-hp-laptop-6710b-iirc/ So for those who can't enable bluetooth, though everything seems be configured correctly (i.e. bluetooth should work with ubuntu 7.10 livecd out of the box), I will say, try restore you bios. It should work.
P.S. Maybe someone who has 6710b with Vista&Linux (or XP&Linux) onboard can confirm that problem? And when it is true, that many models (mine is GR681EA) have this problem, maybe we should report this bug to the kernel team?
-- Hi, on my 6710b when the bluetooth is disabled in Vista, it cannot be enabled under linux. Turning it on in Vista solves the problem. I suppose that Windows' drivers change some setting in the BIOS. I don't think it is a kernel bug, just a missing functionality in linux - cannot touch BIOS settings.
[edit] Deprecated sections
I suggest to remove deprecated sections like :
- Video (Intel X3100) + i915 patch
There is already correct new driver in the portage and makes this obsolete.
- Framebuffer with Gensplash
This should be rewritten since there is now no vesafb-tng in the kernel but uvesafb-tng or vesafb with slightly different approaches.
I also suggest to reformat this page to keep some concept like to avoid current bloat like inline patches, chaotic order etc.
I'm willing to do that if it will accepted or discuss it if it is be rejected.
