Talk:Gateway Solo 5300
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
What's the purpose of this? How does most of this differ from a standard Gentoo install?
- Laptop-specific Xorg and fbsplash configs, it seems. Most of it isn't any different from the default install. -Tro
- Should the rest be removed, then? Seems kinda like a waste of space. I left a message on the creator's talk page. I'm gonna wait for him to respond before I start lopping parts out that may be needed. -- MighMoS 00:49, 4 Apr 2005 (GMT)
[edit] It helps to see how others did it...
I have a Gateway solo 9500 with MDK 10.1 but with a sound vs. usb issue. I was advised that Gentoo would be the distro of choice concerning network and irq issues as well as the sound vs. usb issue. The fact that this gentleman has a very similar machine and that this machine works all around (network is up, usb is up, and sound is up) is most encouraging. Rather than removing this -or the other laptop pages- I would ask that they'd be made more extensive as laptops are the achiles heel of Linux as well as a potential "growth market."
Dec2006 - I did a gentoo install on the same machine. The monitor freq information was invaluable as well as some of the other info on that page. I was not able to manually compile a kernel with all hardware but an auto compile with genkernel worked great (I tweaked it later). kde-meta took 3 days to emerge (750MHz). Very few issues left: I can't get the Vol+ Vol- and Mute keys to work (they don't show in xev). And, more important, if I use 'suspend', when it wakes up there's no more keyboard. Haven't figured out how to use hibernate or standby yet.
