[edit] Cleanup Progress

I externalised some parts of the article today, see History. Please participate in the Cleanup process! pi~ 21:13, 27 October 2005 (GMT)

I rewrite the graphics section today, the old one was very long, but really out-of-date. Dom 14:07, 21 Jan 2007 (CET).

[edit] Splitting up the article

Hi, I am currently adding information how to install Linux on Fujitsu Stylistic 5010. Since the hardware is very similar I suggest splitting this excellent but rather long article into pieces so others can hook in.

For example the general facts of the modem section could be factored out. Then you only have to say what is specific on your box without the need to duplicate.

[edit] Split up

Hi, I don't favourize the thought about splitting up the howto, because it's main purpose was to gather ALL information about this laptop in ONE place. Your split up would generally reverse this howtos purpose. Why don't you just crosslink to my sections or just copy them?? I don't want to offend you, but I will not split this howto. --feffi 01:18, 23 Aug 2004 (GMT)

I agree with feffi, I don't think splitting it up will do any good. Although the article is kind of huge, splitting it up will make it harder to maintain and difficult for others to find the relevant information. If there are parts in the article, though, which are generic enough, you could create a new article about it and refer to it. --pi~ 12:47, 28 Aug 2004 (GMT)

Yeah, sorry. I didn't mean to split up in a negative sense. That is to have small pieces that are of no use anymore. I instead thought of having separate pages for the generic facts. Many of the components described in the article are used in Centrino notebooks and tablets. We could have a general page describing the Intel ICH4 so people know what it is and how to use it with Gentoo. Looking at the backlinks they would be able to look for more specific information. Right the things a wiki can do: explain words and point to related things. Yunno, the square brackets and stuff like this ;). Again, sorry if I was unspecific at this or harsh in a way. Keep it up! --RocketITP 13:51, 28 Aug 2004 (GMT)

--> Well, I guess the community will decide :) whether to split this up eventually, or not. In my opinion, that's also part of putting something like this in a wiki. Remark: I was kind of surprised by your reaction, feffi, because others utter their opinion. In my opinion, copying howto-pages is not a great idea because several copies need to be kept up to date / maintained. Personally (I've also asked you about this via email, feffi) the article contains also a lot of things that are really really not specific to the Acer TM 80x, especially the sections Networking Tools and Styleguide. Not that these sections are wrong or bad, on the opposite, I think they're really informative. They're just not specific to this machine at all. --tuxlover

In spite of my prior declaration I now support the splitup of the article. Before, I just though about splitting the article in (page 1, 2,...,n), which would've been a PITA to maintain. That's what I was against. It is a reasonable approach to decouple the non-relevant parts on the other hand. feffi, it was a reasonable thing to keep the whole tutorial together while it was still in the forums, as it is really awful to dig through a whole 20-page thread to find anything. But this is a totally different medium. The real power of this wiki is that we can distribute the information to several articles while maintaining the overall structure and readability. In fact I strongly believe that it will even improve the readability of this howto, as well as provide a lot of information to other users who would never have looked into the original article. So let's clean up the attic, blow out the dust, keep up the spirit that made the original thread to what it is :) --pi~ 19:05, 28 Jan 2005 (GMT)

Came along. Saw the signs. Now lets use the power of this wiki! --RocketITP 16:32, 18 Feb 2005 (GMT)

The Avocea part for example would make an excellent stand-alone article. A link in the appropriate section would be sufficient. --pi~ 12:54, 5 Mar 2005 (GMT)

The pam_usb Part would make a great article also. It is not specific to this notebook. Extra article plus link is better IMO. -- Squiddle, too lazy for an own accunt

You're right about the parts to split out. If anyone would help to do this task, it would be really nice :) Who wants to help me update this fine piece as it got a little outdated in the meantime? --feffi 07:21, 30 Jun 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Suspend & Radeon

How well does the radeon handle suspending? I heard the ATI driver gives much trouble with this. Anyone could help me out? --RubenV 07:24, 1 Sep 2004 (GMT)

--> no problem here with radeon. kernel module loaded and there is no problem after (software) suspend. also 3d acceleration works as before. tuxlover

depends which suspend mode you mean. s3 is a bit troublesome, see the forum thread for more info & a link. --pi~ 12:30, 5 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Masked versions

In the code, a masked version of sys-apps/pcsc-lite is used. Often this is done because a certain version is needed, but that version is still masked. I would suggest that only that version is unmasked, and not all of them. This makes a lot more sense, because when that specific version is unmasked, the user proceeds with using unmasked versions from there on.

[edit] MTRR fix

Quick question: Is the MTRR fix still relevant or has this been resolved in the meantime? -- peter

Afaik it's still relevant if you want to prevent errors w/ the graphics drivers pi~ 20:36, 27 October 2005 (GMT)
