[edit] AC power electrical interference (Solved)

I've had my laptop for over a year, but recently I get a lot of (what appears to be) electrical interference when I try to watch things on TV, /with/ the AC power adapter plugged in. Both the outputted video (svideo) and audio suffer -- there are horizontal lines that slowly continuously scroll up the tv screen, and the audio becomes scratchy and over-amplified. While running off of the battery, it becomes crystal clear again. Could it be a worn out power connector? Anyone else experiencing this?

  • Solved:* It appears to have been something with the way my TV was set up. Unplugging another video-input cable (which was recently put in there) got rid of the interference.

[edit] Suspend and Resume with 2.6.20

After having endless problems with suspend and resume, and getting almost there with kernel 2.6.19 (battery and temp info got messed up), kernel 2.6.20 now works almost flawlessly.

Almost.

Occasionally, after a resume, the IDE driver goes berserk trying to recover an error with the CD/DVD drive — endless "status error: status=0x58..." errors appear. If I catch it and rmmod ide_cd, it seems to recover. Otherwise, the next suspend just hangs.

The question is, does anyone else see the same issue?

[edit] Free Xorg-Drivers

Does someone use the free "radeon" driver with dri (from mesa project)? I tried to install it, but I get a "[kdm] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly" in my /var/log/messages and no further details in Xlog.

Chris: I use it and it works well. DRI and beryl/compiz work without XGL as the open-source driver offers GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap. xorg 7.2, xf86-video-ati 6.6.3, mesa 6.5.2.

[edit] HARDWARE Failure

Bad news, a blue line appeared from the top to the bottom of the screen smack down right to the middle of the screen. The line of dead pixels is on the screen all the time from the time the machine is powered on. Too bad , I used this machine for only 14 months and have no warranty left. Bummer, anyone else with hardware problems. Mgc: I also had a hardware failure, the DVD drive died after only about 1 year of usage. Seems to be a problem with the model as others on the net report similar issues.

[edit] compiling Flash-Media kernel module (solved)

I get following errors trying to compile the flash-media-module:

Did someone have better results?

[edit] hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01)

I upgraded to kernel 2.6.16. Hibernate works with irqpoll acpi_irq_balance noapic

The downside is that I get the message above repeated many times in /var/log/syslog I have not figured out yet what can be done, I tried adding kernel parameters hdc=noprobe hdc=cdrom

but it has no effect. Anyone else seeing this. I am using Ubuntu dapper.

Update: I decided to use a 2.6.15 ubuntu kernel without any of the parameters 'irqpoll acpi_irq_balance noapic'. Hibernate still works and I do not get the lost interrupt error 'cdrom_pc_intr' anymore.

[edit] Getting Cedega work

Is there someone who got DirectX-Games working with Cedega? My attempts ended up with Cedega installed properly but the games starting with just a black screen - then aborting. -Jakob

You may want to look at the symbolic links I've put into "ati drivers" section of the manual. I'm running older Steam games (Half-Life, Opposing Force) under cedega-5.[01] without any problems (with full acceleration). HL2 unfortunately fails to use acceleration, but still runs in the exquisitely slow, software render mode. Oakad 04:14, 26 March 2006 (GMT)

[edit] Software interrupt eats 50% of the CPU (resolved)

I installed the 2.6.15.4 kernel on the factory available empty logical partition of the disk and kept WinXP on the first half of the disk. The instalation went OK but then when I run top it indicates that about 50% of the CPU is consumed by a software interrupt. These 50% are commited to the software interrupt indepently of if there is any Linux processes running or not. What might be causing this? -Ivan

[edit] RE: Software interrupt eats 50% of the CPU

Ivan: this is related to the clock double speed issue. If you installed a 64-bit kernel, you will need to add a kernel parameter disable_timer_pin_1 or if you use an older kernel use the kernel parameter no_timer_check.

Look under the troubleshooting section for 32-bit fixes.

[edit] Shutdown and suspend?

Has anyone been able to get this laptop to both shutdown and suspend/ resume properly? noapic causes it to not shut down properly but suspend fine, and removing it vica-versa (the reference to the shutdown problem with noapic was removed a few weeks ago - has this been fixed, and if so, how?)

[edit] RE: Shutdown and suspend?

This problem with noapic will be fixed with kernel version 2.6.16 (rc6 works fine here)

[edit] SPDIF IO-Port

Can someone use digital Audio port? I know that it should be integrated in the headphone port, i guess as optical signal. But i couldn't find a way to enable it. Any help? -Jakob

[edit] Both S3 and S4 Working

I posted the question on sleep states and a day or so later prayers were answered and a detailed howto is posted on making both S3 and S4 work. Amazing. Thank you for turning this machine into what a laptop should be.

I am using kernel 2.6.15.4, with swsusp, ndiswrapper, video_post and passing the kernel parameters

disable_timer_pin_1 acpi_irq_balance noapic resume=/dev/hdaX

I am not using irqpoll yet, not sure if some driver will need it. It causes S4 to reboot during wakeup and without it so far things seem to work fine except for wifi.

[edit] Sleep States and Wake Up

Has anyone managed to get S4 suspend-to-disk or S3 suspend-to-ram to work. It seems to work but then you get a blank screen. I never managed to wake it up correctly. This is the only significant problem I have with this laptop. Are we close to an answer on this.

[edit] Synaptics Touchpad Issue

My touchpad didn't show in /proc/bus/input/devices, only showed the keyboard. The touchpad would work if I hit FN+F7 then clicked a mouse button to send an event. However that gets a little annoying, and makes it a pain to run kdm, gdm, xdm. I got it to work at boot by adding the following to my /etc/conf.d/local.start
echo -n "psmouse" > /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio3/drvctl
I'm running Gentoo 2.6.12R6
-Jon

Kernel option "i8042.nomux" (or, may be, some other i8042.* option) is supposed to deal with this. Upgrade to 2.6.14 should also help.
-Alex

[edit] DMA-Mode issue (solved)

I cannot get DMA mode working for my cd-drives. Did someone solve this issue? Hdparm -I says it is possible but when I think i've set it, it's just the same as before. Copying or burning a cd causes a high system-load, watching a dvd ("on-the-fly") isn't possible.

With the help of Jonathan, here is the solution: My kernel parameters were hdc=cdrom and hdc=noprobe. Without the noprobe option DMA-mode works! -Jakob

[edit] irda issue (solved):

I cannot get the irda driver to work. After applying the patch, I get the following error: r2d2 src # modprobe nsc-ircc FATAL: Error inserting nsc_ircc (/lib/modules/2.6.15-gentoo-r5/kernel/drivers/net/irda/nsc-ircc.ko): No such device FATAL: Error running install command for nsc_ircc

dmesg reports: nsc-ircc, Found chip at base=0x02e nsc-ircc, driver loaded (Dag Brattli) nsc_ircc_open(), can't get iobase of 0x2f8

Any help appreciated...

Resolution: I had the wrong device in /etc/modprobe.d/irda for the setserial command.

In order to make xgnokii and kmobiletools work, I had to add the user in the tty group and add the following into /etc/conf.d/irda:

Code: /etc/conf.d/irda
modprobe ircomm_tty # not sure if this is the right place to load this module...
echo 115200 > /proc/sys/net/irda/max_baud_rate
echo 1000 > /proc/sys/net/irda/min_tx_turn_time
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/irda/max_tx_windo

IRDA=yes
IRDADEV=irda0

#DONGLE=actisys+

[edit] Boot from USB drive (solved)

Is it me, or is this bios not capable of booting from a USB drive. I have looked all through the bios options, and checked the boot time menu, and can't seem to find an option where it will boot from USB. I thought most major bios'es from the last few years had this feature.

Solved: You can boot from a USB device, my current installation is running from a 30gb USB drive. Make sure you connect the USB device with the power OFF. Press F2 to go into BIOS setup. Go to the "Boot" tab. You should see the "Hard Drive" section has a + beside it. Hit return "Hard Drive" and you should see the internal disk as well as the USB disk. Use F5 to swap their positions, save and exit the bios and it will boot from the USB drive. The down side is that you have to do this each time you want to boot from the drive. As far as I am aware you cannot set it to boot every time a USB drive is connected.

Thanks for the info. I noticed that when you hit "F-12" at boot to change the boot order, the "Hard Drive" option has a plus next to it, meaning that the bios thinks there are two hard drives. I just can't figure out how to get it to give me an option of which hard drive to boot. I'll try the "F-5" option. Thanks again.

[edit] Kernel > 2.6.14

I have made several attempts to upgrade kernel to 2.6.14 as well 2.6.16. Kernel compiles fines, after kernel build and re-build of ndiswrapper when I reboot system hangs while loading ndiswrapper. I have tried ndsiwrapper (1.7, 1.8, 1.9) but nothing worked. I even tried to use bcm43xx as per instruction and it also fails. Can anyone help me with 2.6.16 kernel. 02-Apr-2006

Solved: Driver I was using from Acer CD / Site was 32 driver. After upgrading to 64bit driver it is working fine. 03-Apr-2006

[edit] Problems with APIC and USB

Is there anyway I can use any of the susupend schemes without disabling APIC.

The problem is that without APIC I end up with most of the onboard devices (sound, usb, pcmcia) on IRQ 11. When this happens it ACPI resets IRQ 11 half way through the bootup sequence. Not a problem in a normal Kernel boot but as I am using the USB system to host my boot drive (USB2 hd caddy) it's a bit of a problem. The Kernel looses track of the boot drive and ends in a kernel panic (unable to mount root)

This only happens with ACPI installed. Adding APIC solves the problem but means I cannot use suspend?

[edit] SDHCI

Now that 2.6.17 is out with SDHCI, Can anyone get the card reader to work with the in-kernel driver?

I've set up fake pci hotplug and the driver, but the "magic" script isn't working.

The script fails when it tries to power cycle the PCIxx21 bus. It fails with the dmesg output "fakephp: Can't remove PCI devices with other PCI devices behind it yet." lspci shows nothing on the bus.

I did modify the script to unload my ieee1394 modules as 1394 is on that bus. The module unloaded and the hardware powered down successfully. Also FlashMedia was successfully removed by that script. But without power cycling the bus I think SDHCI will still get resource collisions.

Reply: Honestly, you should try this driver instead

http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en.phtml?title=TI_FlashMedia_xx12/xx21_driver

Its much faster (around 4 MB/s) and you dont need to fiddle around with the pci registers etc

Chris

follow-up: I have now gotten SDHCI to work through modifying the posted script, albeit without the bus mastering or dma abilities. Umounting takes about 30 seconds after I've copied 32MB or so. I will look into that driver; Thanks Chris for the link.

[edit] Wifi with native driver

I just tried the new 2.6.18 kernel + a combined patch for the broadcom wifi 4318: now wireless works fine. It starts up with out of the box gentoo init scripts. No more fiddeling required.

The patch can be found here: https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/bcm43xx-dev/attachments/20060923/a5f3034e/attachment.ksh

Excellent! Just unmerged the ndiswrapper :)

Christian Hoffmann

Annotation: 2.6.18.1 has above fixes. Try that. It worked for me out-of-the-box.

[edit] Settings for /etc/make.conf

What should 'VIDEO_CARDS' be set to in make.conf?

I have it set as: VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx"

but I was wondering if it should be:

VIDEO_CARDS="ati"

If we want to use the proprietary ATI drivers, which is the best choice for our lovely Ferraris? :)

ANSWER (from Joël): The proper make.conf setting is "fglrx" for the proprietary driver, *or* "radeon" for the open-source driver. With the VIDEO_CARDS variable properly set, you can remove "x11-drivers/ati-drivers" and "x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati" from /var/lib/portage/world, because they are taken as dependencies when you emerge xorg-server.

[edit] 4GB Memory

Hi, does anybody know if the Ferrari supports 4GB of RAM? Does the BIOS support memory remapping? Thanks,

Chris
