Talk:Desktop Linux
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
Where's this document going? It seems to be nothing more than a list of packages to me. Are you going to go through every package of every desktop environment for each task? Would it not be better to use and expand the desktop environment specific pages, many of which already exist?
- Yes that's the whole point, many packages exist already, but I can't seem to find a descent place to find those. As I stated I Don't want to install Gnome or KDE, but want some functionality that's in Gnome and KDE. I'm sure i'm not the only one that wants more from their desktop, without going the whole Gnome or KDE way.
The way to do other things can easily be found out already by looking at the howto pages - you want to set up a printer, you got to the hardware howto's.
- Yes, that's why it's only a link to the howto. Granted maybe setting up a printer is to basic and shouldnt' go here, that I do agree with.
While the idea of an introductory article seems at first a good one, I'd question the practicality of actually attempting it and additionally how long and how well such an article could be sanely maintained.
- It shouldn't be to long, maybe it should be an index pointing to the other howto's, with a description on WHY to choose a specific package or what options are available.
Additionally, I'd note that some of the tasks already listed - printers with cups for example - can easily apply to servers as well as desktops. I believe that classifying what's desktop and what's not is pointless.
- Yep, I think so too
Also, please don't refer to I or we in articles. You should refer to the reader as 'you' and anyone else either by name or something like 'user'. The writer should not be mentioned in a wiki article. As well as trying to maintain a consistant style across the wiki, a single article can have many authors, so referring to the author as 'I' is just plain silly.
- Yep, absolutly right. But as this is still just a stub, an intro to what I plan to accomplish, that wasn't high on my list, it was more onto getting something down, see where it would go, and wether people would find it to be usefull. Once that is established, then detail to those points should deffinatly be taken care of.

Thanks for the feedback AllenJB, please, anyone, the more talk the better!
This seems to be an article more about setting up something minimal (w/o a DE). Maybe it should be moved and more aptly named. That being said, if it is a minimal installation guide, then the layout and information needs a serious update. Thoughts?--Micah 01:29, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
