[edit] Wiki page?

Why the heck is this on the gentoo wiki? --Tulcod 05:10, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

The article is about creating new packages from scratch. It is possible to write new software for Gentoo. The article is designed to be a walkthrough for developers to write and package their first application programs. The article is in its infancy, because I am not an experienced Linux developer, and I am new to Gentoo, but the article can be expanded as more technical information becomes available. - Mark Hobley

yeah, but it's possible to write new software in fortran for minix as well. my question is why this belongs on a wiki about Gentoo. of course it's interesting, but it has totally nothing to do with gentoo. --Tulcod 15:08, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

I would agree that writing new software in fortran for minix has nothing to do with Gentoo, but I didn't write anything about that. However, I do believe that writing new software for use with Gentoo has something to do with Gentoo. At this time my notes are generic, because I believe that software should not be distribution specific, enabling software to be ported from other distributions. However there are Gentoo specifics, such as creating an accompanying ebuild, that are specific to Gentoo to be added to these notes. However, I do not know how to do this at this time, so this information has not yet been written. - Mark.

Then write a page about writing gentoo ebuilds, not about writing the generic part! --Tulcod 06:28, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Why disagreeing a tips from developpers.

We know for long times, somes distributions are specialized in portability; especially gentoo had gracefully contribued to PPC developpement. Theirs contributions to common help in developpement like creating theirs own users-set with 'pre-skills', creating live-cd, stage cd, and giving step-by-step proc. like thoses who helping thems in gnu/gpl community by giving example to create an helloword or 'foo' CLI from 'bar' Packages, may naturally help creating community with needs and probably having more hands to develops softwares on any platforms. Giving them idea that it's not so complicate to create packages will give them another chance to not scrap theirs effort in stability, like using an old software that 'stuck-in-the-middle' on a current daily run, who will not complain, changing packages/software or even changing the whole distribution because another one had newest version of the same product ! This is not colors, this is not hi-gizmo thing's that keep people in place, this is something that work !

Giving to people a proof, things are simplers to do, may give reason to hold to them with this distro. They are not making million with, but they are open to information and challenge the promiscuity back to them by giving way to roll up handles and offer basic thing. As IBM make processor for game cube "http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/516.wss", and give way to use bash shell, give STL, c++ advise for coding, why not Gentoo giving compilation and packages création tips to help improving portability !
