[edit] Overlay available

Warning: Please note there is an overlay available that has a bigger scope than this page, and is also kept up to date better than the page on this site. Before adding it to the wiki I wanted someone with more experience of this wiki to give their thoughts. The overlay can be found at http://wiki.gentoo-xeffects.org/Main_Page - We could just point users into that direction, since this overlay is out of date.

--Voidzero 15:59, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Instead of being lazy and just referring to another page, why don't you try and update what you think is out of date or wrong. It's really not that out of date at all. If you could point out individual flaws, it would benefit the OPEN wiki community better. --Jbdubbs 03:23, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
I completely disagree, instead of taking the burden of (not) maintaining two pages with similar content, we should provide a link. This is the Internet, the "ht" in "http" stands for "hypertext". This is not about being lazy, it is about providing useful up to date information.

[edit] Plugins compilation error

beryl-settings-dump src/.libs/lib* returns an eror and then the build fails, currently with splash. I'm currently hacking around since the gtk-window-decorator from gentoo compiz does not start with me.

[edit] Beryl in KDE

In my case, Beryl causes problems with KDE when I install it like the wiki told me. The windows decorations were not there and there was no way to work with the windows - either typing commands into "konsole" was impossible.

My personal workaround: I did not write "KDEWM=beryl-manager" into /etc/env.d/99kde-env. I created a symbolic link ~/.kde/Autostart/beryl-manager pointing on /usr/bin/beryl-manager instead.

--Erlenmayr 09:51, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
--Mimosinnet 14:22, 19 June 2007 (UTC) I had the same issues than Erlenmayr. I do not have KDEWM=/usr/bin/beryl, just autostart beryl-manager.
--Phoenix_AC 03:37, 24 June 2007 (UTC) I had the same problem, but the solution was different in my case. If i autostarted beryl-manager the window manager still was set to KWin. So, as stated in the beryl-wiki, the environment-variable KDEWM should be set to /usr/bin/beryl-manager and NOT to /usr/bin/beryl. Then it worked perfect :-)

[edit] Beryl doing weird keyboard mapping things to me

Hey yall, I can emerge beryl just fine, and all I have to do to run it on my box is change the kdewm=beryl-manager line and it starts up and works great with AIGLX. My only problem is that my f12 key and my super key don't work, and when I go into World of Warcraft the w,s,d,a keys don't work along with some others, but they work fine in other programs. This is the part that really confuses me is working in some applications but not others. Does anyone have any suggestions at all on this? --jlaustill

The problem with not working modifiers is maybe because somewhere in Beryl configuration you have enabled shortcuts using these modifiers and having key set to None (ie. the modifier itself triggers them). The same implies to F12. -- Sten 18:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Translucency Options

Whoever asked this question in the wiki:

Anything under Window Behavior in Control Center is irrelevant as it only applies to KWin. KWin is replaced with Beryl at startup.

[edit] Aquamarine

Does anyone know why Aquamarine isn't in portage?

Aquamarine is still considered unstable software. It could probably be added, but would probably end up being package.mask..... Better just to get it off the xeffects overlay anyway.--Jbdubbs 00:42, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Any estimate on when it will reach portage?

I would guess with the release of Beryl 0.1.4, that way it will have time to be tested in svn first. --Jbdubbs 18:05, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, now that 0.1.4 is in portage, aquamarine still isn't. Any revised estimate? Thanks.

[edit] Recent changes concerning svn ebuild sections

Twice in the last two days, I've had people deleting the SVN sections either entirely, or trying to refer to another page. The instructions for doing it are very clear, and I see no reason to refer to another wiki..... what are the reasons for doing this.... --Jbdubbs 05:00, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

It's not my wiki, but I think it's fine to point to and refer to SVN related stuff that is within portage, or on it's way to into portage. I feel that now beryl is in the tree, to keep the page simple, it should be just the basic portage howto, and if someone wants to do the SVN install, have another page on this wiki that shows them how, and have a link to it, from [Beryl] say towards the bottom of the page, in a "resources" section. BerylSVN perhaps? my .02 --Bunkacid 05:17, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it's a bad idea to keep the page simple, I just don't see how it's cluttering up anything. It even has it's own section that people can skip if they don't want an svn ebuild. The page isn't that long to begin with really. The two times that the section has been deleted, it hasn't been done correctly, leaving in stuff about aquamarine and other -* items. I am, however, going to move all the package.unmask stuff down to the svn section so that normal users won't have to bother with it. --Jbdubbs 19:15, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

For me it's not a matter of page length, or different sections of a page. But keeping the BerylSVN on a separate page entirely, and I'm not opposed to having a link the the "bleeding edge" near the top of Beryl, it should keep everyone happy and the Beryl page won't have to be updated so often. Thanks for the discussion. --Bunkacid 01:04, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it's a horrible idea to have the SVN section on another page.... I was just having a hard time figuring out why a perfectly good section was deleted and an external link was in it's place. If you want to move the SVN section to another page, so right ahead and move it over, but leave the Beryl page intact until I can properly update it if you don't want to do the leg work. Just let me know when the other page is ready.--Jbdubbs 23:04, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I'll create the new page, but since I'm not using the SVN version, I'll just copy verbatim the information. Thanks again, --Bunkacid 04:55, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copy to the Beryl Wiki

Hi, I maintain the official Beryl wiki. Could you help by adding some of the information on Beryl from the Gentoo wiki to the Beryl wiki? We are trying to make one centralized source of Beryl information, and this is good material. It would help out the Beryl project at lot; currently our wiki is still young, but it will certainly grow as Beryl becomes more popular. --Mazin07

Mazin07, I think you have an excellent idea, but I'm still struggling to figure out why the xeffects wiki keeps trying to remove or prevent the adding of new information to perfectly good wiki articles. On your main page, it even has that xeffects wiki is preferred.... and the Gentoo main wiki link that I put there several months ago has been removed entirely... Is this how you think things should be, or has this been done by someone other than yourself. We've had some people trying to do the same over here, instead of updating information on our site, we've had people just posting exterior links to the xeffects wiki for no good reason. --Jbdubbs 17:53, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fixed incorrect information again

Once again, people are putting incorrect information on the Gentoo wiki concerning Beryl. I suggest that before removing valid packages for the SVN section, you consult the xeffects overlay. There were some excellent corrections made by 208.186.177.99, however some thereafter were done in haste. DO NOT CHANGE THIS ARTICLE IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. It's a vital resource to the community about an excellent and popular software product. Treat this page as if it were in production at a large corporation. Thanks. --Jbdubbs 01:41, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fix problem with going out mouse cursor in Firefox and others

Open /etc/X11/xorg.conf, type in Device section:
Option "HWCursor" "on"
Save and restart X (ctrl+alt+backscape).

[edit] makedepend

Beryl makes use of the makedepend command/utility. x11-misc/makedepend is the Ebuild that provides it. Beryl installed fine via portage after installing x11-misc/makedepend

[edit] gnome session manager

the description in Gnome Session Manager does the same thing like desktop file in .

[edit] Wrong value for KDEWM, beryl-manager is not the WM

The Using KDE section says to use:

KDEWM=/usr/bin/beryl-manager

beryl-manager is not the Window Manager. It should be:

KDEWM=/usr/bin/beryl

(reference for example [1])

  • --Mimosinnet 08:21, 18 June 2007 (UTC) Maybe it should be mention in the section that we need to autostart beryl-manager.

This not works here, I must put :

KDEWM=/usr/bin/beryl-manager

to beryk loads...

[edit] Xcomposite in xorg.conf

I had to activate composite in xorg.org for Beryl to work. Maybe, it could be added to the xorg section.

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

[edit] Article deletion

(I moved and merged a discussion here --Gionnico 18:02, 3 September 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Beryl

You can revert it but

Beryl can be installed directly from portage. Beryl was previously available via the Gentoo xeffects overlay but has since been removed in favor of the new bleeding edge compiz-fusion (a merge of compiz and Beryl). Please refer to the Xeffects web page for details.

is simply wrong, you can install Beryl using xeffects (I have just done it) and I had updated this part before finally removing everything. And this section is only a copy of the xeffects wiki (or the other way around) but a link would definitely be better.

The DE installation is also explained in xeffects (and cleaner).

Only the troubleshooting section is not paraphrasing xeffects.

I still believe linking to xeffects is better, save troubleshooting/bugs. At least there could be a warning to say that, if you are really interested in getting it running, you can go see xeffects.

I really do not understand the need to double the information on the internet. But I sure do not care all that much, I just wanted to clean a bit these articles by providing a link to a (IMHO) better source. Esp. after trying myself to install Beryl/XGL.

Whatever... Synss 08:09, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Double information or no, an entire HOWTO (and IMO a good HOWTO) was deleted. I don't think we should remove an article because it has a counterpart on another site. --Danthehat 08:32, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree with you, Synss did something similar for Compiz-fusion, too. See my talk page. I'm going to put these discussions in the related articles, so they are more visible --Gionnico 17:48, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
