[edit] What goes in a code box, commandline...?

What's supposed to go in a code box? except for real "code" also commands spanning several lines? And if so, what's the supposed title of several commands (something like: unmerge this and merge that?)

How do you use special characters like the pipe (|) in a code box?

What's the difference between codebox and commandline? I mean, why does one use a totally different look and font than the other one?

I start the discussion in the maillist about templates unification and put an example here and check out here, so we are working on it

[edit] Box_Warning template?

I dont like the Box_File template being red. Maybe make it blue and add a Box_Warning template in the style of the current Box_File template?

I could really use a Box_Warning template in any case. --~~ Hackeron

What color should the file box be? i'm thinking mayby blue? thoughts -- Thrasher 18:14, 10 Aug 2004 (GMT)

Depends on what "look" we are trying to achieve, something like the Official Gentoo Documentation(OGD), an improved version of it(less professional, more like OSS Community humor/friendliness?), or something totally different?
Opinion:
Independent on how the boxes look like, take the OGD colors, red for warnings, light green for notes/extra stuff, yellow for important things.
Green boxes should handle the files and code(this meaning scripts), blue boxes the code(this meaning the shell prompt and all the output from the commands). In both cases, enable tt and nowiki inside of the templates, so the need to start lines with space is void, this is overly used. Maybe in the blue box case, other templates should be made to make the commands look different from the output. --renrutal 08:09, 9 Feb 2005 (GMT)

Okay, it may have been a good idea to discuss it first, but I found this page after I made a new template. The thought is this; giving people "code" to run (command lines, ect.) without a detailed explanation of what is done is irresponsible. It is important for users (especially new users) to understand what is happening if only at a fundamental level. To that end, the overall goal should be to help and educate the reader.

Why am I listing this here? I made the explanation box blue. I would suggest purple for the file box, as it would fit with the color scheme, and then use red for a new warning box. The warning box should be used around code that is possibly dangerous to the system.

A second box should be created, being a yellow or orange. These should contain special notes, requirements or gotchas. It would make the important items stand out to new and seasoned users. Personally I like orange as it stands out better.

[edit] Open link in a new window?

  • Can we add in preferences (best case scenario) an options to open an URL in the same window or in the new one?

[edit] Wanted template change: Box File

Is it possible to change

File: ...

content

so content will be same as typed
like in the <nowiki></nowiki>
with backespaces as typed
'cause a lot of config files have "=" mark wich mess up with wiki punctuation (at least what i run on to)

It seems that this wont work, it causes the template to stop working and just show the {{{2}}} inside the tags, i dont see a way around this at this time

Maybe sent a letter to developers of MediaWiki to include this feature in their next version?
