Help talk:Page naming conventions
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
I think this page needs more explanation. What's the difference between a HowTo and a Tip? (I have a vague idea but I think it should be explicitly explained).
I also think the naming system itself is very flawed. Shouldn't the article type be purely defined by categories it's in?
Additionally the current system introduces a couple of problems:
- It requires the creation of lots of redirects where as if pages went purely on the page title, http://gentoo-wiki.com/dispatch-conf would take you straight to the dispatch-conf article without the need for redirects.
- Articles develop, for example the dispatch-conf article, originally categorised as a TIP is in my opinion basically a full blown HOWTO now. Using a system where pages were categorised purely on what categories they were in the move would be a simple change of category.

- I agree. The naming system is a relic from the first days of GW when we didn't have useful categories anywhere. Now that we do, we can affort to lose the HOWTO/TIP prefixes. You may want to bring this up on the devel mailing list. I'm not the only admin. -TRO talkcontribs 15:24, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- I have often worked on removing the HOWTO and TIP from most articles and making the title more thigns like: dispatch-conf quick guide (example) or similar what i would like to do is reserve the primary name as a portal for most things unless there is only 1 article involing that topic (rare). see for instance the cacti page, it is a portal with a definition and such plus links to the other cacti related articles. that is my ultimate goal, however there are hundreds of articles to change to follow this convention, i have done a handful and when i have time I will do more. (also i will post this on the devel mailing list for discussion tomorrow if AllenJB does not first) -- Thrasher 19:56, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Well I did it. I went and rewrote it. Feel free to improve it. Or revert it.
