[edit] OpenOffice KDE Tricks

At the time of writing the only special setup steps for OpenOffice under KDE (beyond emerging openoffice and waiting while it lumbers through it's compile) is to setup printing using the KDE print mechanism.

[edit] Printing via the KDE print system

In OpenOffice 2.x printing is configured with a seperate utility spadmin, with this you can remove the default lpr printer entry and replace it with PDF based printing through kprinter

[edit] Global Settings

As root you can configure the global printer list with a graphical tool spadmin.

Note: Spadmin is a GUI tool; you need to be logged in as root under KDE, either directly or in a terminal that can access the current DISPLAY ok.
 $ cd /usr/lib/openoffice/program/
 $ ./spadmin

This will open up a gui for managing printers, with the default lpr entry present.

Description

  • Add a new printer by clicking on [New Printer ...]

Description

  • Choose a PDF converter, click on [Next >>]

Description

  • Use the default driver, click on [Next >>]

Description

  • For the command line of the device, enter:
 /usr/kde/3.5/bin/kprinter
  • click on [Next >>]

Description

  • Give the printer a name: such as 'Kprinter', my name is descriptive since I have newbies on the system..
  • Click on [Finish]

Description

  • Set the new KDE printer as the default for the system, highlight it and click [Default]:
  • Finally, you probably want to remove the non-functional lpr entry by highlighting that and clicking [Remove...]
  • Note: You cannot remove a printer entry while it is the 'Default' printer!

Description

[edit] User Settings

Users can also run the spadmin tool in the same manner as the root user, and can create their own printer connections, etc.

  • Printers defined by the superuser will always be present.
