I install gentoo "standart way" from live cd. No problems with hardware required for installation so far.

[edit] Hardware support

Nothing specific. By they way, i am using sys-kernel/suspend2-sources kernel, which let me to boot system faster.

Also good to run "speedstep" to save battery life:

Linux Kernel Configuration: Speedstep

  • IPW2200, working, but i have strange behavior, loosing about 1 time per 1-3 hours connection for ~10 seconds. Tested with WPA-PSK, WEP encryption.
  • ACPI can be selected, but it will give wrong information about remaining battery. To have proper information emerge omnibook.
  • Cardreader not working at all under linux, and there is no useful information about it on internet.
  • Modem, fireware i didnt try.
  • Network card RTL8193 supported completely by 8139too kernel module.
  • USB working well, but i am not satisfied about speed. I have enabled EHCI in kernel, but with same config standalone PC booting from flash much faster.
  • Video card supported perfectly by stable x.org (6.8.2).
File: (Part of) /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Device"
    Identifier "laptopcard"
    Driver "i810"
    Option "MonitorLayout" "TV,LFP"
    Screen 0
EndSection

I have tried to use TV output, but results unstable, and i am not play full screen video, plus quality of video is bad, from windows or from linux on plasma 42', comparing with DVD player. Still i have to spend time to get proper results.

  • Sound card working properly with kernel ALSA driver module snd_intel8x0
  • CD-writer/DVD-reader combo working properly. No failed cd's at all. Using cdrecord dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 for it.
  • touchpad(ALPS?) sometimes not working properly. After resuming from suspend, or boot. After resuming, sometimes it is helps, if i restart in console gpm (/etc/init.d/gpm restart). Sometimes it is freezing, for very short time.

[edit] Bad sides of laptop

  • ENE cardreader seems not going to be supported.
  • Unstable touchpad, sometimes annoying, even in Windows.
  • Laptop without IR port. Thats strange.
  • No PS2 connector for external keyboard/mouse. Have to search USB.
  • Video output have too bad quality.
  • Power connector is weak, i had it broken in 6 month, repaired by warranty. I so many users of Toshiba Satellite M30/M40 series had similar issue.

But overall view can say - laptop is very good for his price.
