Your hardware may vary slightly. My model's (2662) specs :

Works with gentoo kernel 2.6.19-suspend2-r3. (kernel config).

Internal modem	Yes	martian driver (not in portage as of this writing). Very little testing, YMMV. Read the instructions, it involves more than simply compiling and loading the module.
Software Suspend	Yes	Using hibernate-script-1.94-r5.

[edit] Multimedia keys

The following keys are hard-wired and need no software : Brightness controls, Mini-lamp (on/off) (lamp built into lid, illuminating the keyboard), internal/external monitor switching, Volume controls (up, down, mute).
Registered in acpi : lid, sleep (F4), power, suspend to disk (F12), blank screen (F3)
Register in nvram : Thinkpad, Volume controls, Monitor switch, Brightness controls, Mini-lamp.
