[edit] Structure
I've started to work on the Category structure, creating a new "root" category called Category:Browse categories (the only one that will be named as a verb phrase), and using it initially as a "catch-all" for categories I don't have (or don't want to find) any other place for (yet).
Here are some of the issues we need to discuss:
- Category naming conventions
- I've been using: "sentence style" capitalization (initial capital letter followed by lowercase, except for words that would ordinarily be capitalized in an English sentence), pluralized when dealing with specific types of applications (e.g., Category:Text editors), with no unnecessary abbreviations (moved Category:Arch to Category:Architectures).

- Excellent idea on using [[Category:Browse categories]] as the root category. I may
steal, er, borrow that idea for some other wikis I work on. :) — MrDolomite | Talk 05:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Category cleanup
Check out [[Category:Wiki maintenance]], as I have added links to the various Special:Specialpages which have to do with cleanup there.
- Special:Uncategorizedpages - cleaned up with {{Subpage}}. Down to 811
- Special:Unusedcategories - cleaned up with Null article for items tagged with {{catredir}}. Down to zero, w00t!

[edit] April 2008 Cleanup
I've been performing a general cleanup, taking pages from Special:Uncategorizedpages and putting them in appropriate categories in the existing hierarchy.
I found it necessary to create a few more categories. A few users have mentioned vendor categories for hardware on their talk pages. I have added some hardware vendor categories as subcats of hardware for the moment, I felt that having to stick them under Laptop and Desktop or some other combination didn't make sense and would cause too much mess if someone doesn't like the vendor categories.
I also created some new categories and adjusted the templates for the Gentoo Structure stuff. This wiped a good three or four hundred pages off the uncategorized page list. If someone disagrees with how I did it please fix it, but I thought I had done a reasonable job. --Cav 06:23, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Just remembered, it seems odd that Template:HARDWARE Index includes the Hardware category, but the HOWTO/Misc/TIP/Security do not. I personally dislike the behavior of Template:HARDWARE Index in this case. It makes the hardware category difficult to use (as one has to scroll through several pages of results to view all the subcategories) and it helps hide pages that should be given other more specific categorisations.
This seems justified for Template:MAN Index and possibly Template:FAQ Index, but in my opinion should be removed from HARDWARE. --Cav 06:58, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- It's easy enough to revert if someone disagrees, and I've tested that the wiki will automatically re-include the pages in the category, so I have made this change and removed the category include from Template:HARDWARE Index. This is specifically so that I can clean that category up. --Cav 10:25, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Possible Page Content
I've created some possible content for this page at User:AllenJB/Categories - All comments welcome. I propose that if this content is accepted, it's linked in to Help:Contents and Template:Wiki Manual.
