[edit] Ability to Search for Three Letter Words

Maybe this is a nice way to reduce server load by reckless searches, but some very common topics are difficult to find otherwise. Off the top of the mind I can think of: NTP, MPD, XGL,, MP4, SSH, PDA.

This would be really nice, I think it's nice idea. Vote :-) --Miloso 09:05, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] File Upload

Unlike Wikipedia, this project's purpose is to help people get their computers working. As such, it might be very useful to allow uploads of other sorts of files than just images - complete configuration files, .tar.bz2 files with 64-bit windows drivers for ndiswrapper, etc. Then, of course, we'd need a way to link these things into the pages.

It would certainly increase the utility! --Obsidian-fox 22:48, 4 March 2006 (GMT)

Nice idea, although a public ftp server might be a better idea for performance. Also the windows drivers would be a problem: legaly because most of them have restrictions on redistribution, and security-wise because they're binary it's hard to determine whether they're actually what they say they are. --trick 06:21, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
I also think providing some facility for uploading text (.txt, .conf, .log) files would be a good idea. I don't think there's a need for binary files as there's generally plenty of mirrors for these - especially Windows drivers. Just link to them. --AllenJB 23:05, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Icons

The icons on the front page are really flashy and showy. Could you use icons from somthing else, like the Tango icon theme? --trick 06:21, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

I have no problem with you using those icons for other pages if they suit your purpose, however for the time being the icons on the front page will remain as-is - Thrasher 06:31, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ads

The ads on the right are a little bit to offensive. I think they reduce the quality and style of this great site a lot! maybe think of a small paypal button or so -Thomas 80.142.97.214 13:34, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Language Flags

I find using the flag of Germany for German offensive. You know there are other countries too, who speak German (Austria, Switzerland ...), and those countries may not like the fact that their language is all the time associated with Germany. -Martin

There are also many countries other than Spain, France and Portugal which speak Spanish, French and Portugese. What kind of icon would you propose? I have a few sites that I administer and am curious as how to solve this issue. jwagner 23:19, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Flags are a commonly used way of identifying a language. I'm fairly sure that most people know the country of origin of their language. As above, how else should we identify languages using simply an icon without using a flag?
I believe the current method is acceptable and should be kept.

[edit] USE flags

I've noticed a lot of wikis augment use flags with the USE enviroment variable in the shell by prefixing USE="foo bar" to emerge, this is a very poor practice to impose on new Gentoo users. The rational for this is obvious, say a user emerges package foo with USE="-X bar foobar" emerge foo. When the user does a sync and emerge -uD world, the flag augmentions are forgotten, and foo will emerge as USE="X -var -foobar", which will mess up their system in some way or another.

use flags should (in nearly all cases) be augmented with the USE variable in /etc/make.conf or (more preferably) adding an entry to /etc/portage/package.use for each package involved since I belive /etc/make.conf should only be used for flags the user themselves consider a global option they want.

In order to maintain this format globally, I think an Emerge Template should be established to encourage this. -- Aidan 15:05, 18th June 2006 (IST)

[edit] Link to http://gentoo.org

Is there a easy way to navigate to the gentoo.org website (apart from Ctrl-L)? I miss a link on the Main Page. --80.202.91.29 19:54, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Home Page Featured Articles

The front page hasn't changed in a LONG time. Dgrant 22:45, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Favicon

Quite a ridiculous request, but Gentoo-wiki has this boring icon in my Bookmark-Bar :-p

[edit] Custom Namespaces

All the 'prefix' sections (HOWTO, HARDWARE, MAN, etc) could be moved to their own namespaces, which would help with alphabetizing the index pages of those pages. --MidnightLightning 16:23, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

The old style prefixes have now been deprecated. Categories are a far better way of organising pages. See Help:Page naming conventions for more information

[edit] Code Highlighting plugin

For both code listings and command line listings, something like GeSHi would be beneficial both for syntax highlighting and for visual feel as it doesn't give the nested boxes contrast I was experimenting with on my user page. --MidnightLightning 16:23, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Other than bash and maybe python, where are any languages commonly used on this wiki? And outside of config files? In most contexts on this wiki, I'd say syntax highlighting is totally unnecessary and may even serve to confuse users.
--AllenJB 07:17, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
The GeSHi extension would allow better formatting of PRE codeblocks, which are used by any page using the Box File template would be greatly enhanced by it. Yes, bash would be the dominant programming language used here, but also simply showing the bash commands to be used in a certain sequence. The ability to display them concisely (as the Gentoo Installation Handbooks do) would serve to simplify the site rather than confuse it. --MidnightLightning 14:32, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Google Ads at Page Foot

Could the Google Ads at the foot of the page be better separated from the articles by a divider of some description? I'd suggest either moving them outside the article (white) box) or simply adding a horizontal rule above them. Also, I don't know whether it's possible, but I think they'd look better side-by-side rather than on top of each other.
--AllenJB 07:13, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Feeds

It would be nice, if there were RSS/ATOM Feeds for the Wiki --A.skwar 09:16, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

This is already possible for a number of situations, see the following pages:

[edit] Plugin request: ParserFunctions

I'd like to request that the official Parser Functions plugin be added to this wiki. It makes importing templates used on other wiki's (in particular from Wikipedia) easier.
--AllenJB 22:49, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Categories

There's now a substantial category structure on the wiki. Could we have links to Category:Browse categories from the navigation bar and the front page please?
