GPL
From Gentoo Linux Wiki
GNU General Public Licence - The "Magna Carta" of the Free Software movement. Its licensing terms demand that software, created free, should remain free forever and pass this right to its offsprings. Currently, version 2 of the GPL is primarily used.
To summarize:
- Source code of the GPL licensed software must be available to anybody, free of charge (not including possible transportation fees).
- Any software, incorporating GPL licensed code must also be GPL licensed (so called "viral" property of GPL).
- Anybody is free to modify the software, as long as it remains GPL licensed. The attribution to previous authors must always be preserved, though.
