Note: This HOWTO assumes you have installed CUPS

If you do not have CUPS installed, refer to: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml

emerge -va foomatic-filters

[edit] Download the driver

There are three possible drivers for the HL-2040:

1. A premade .ppd file from http://www.profv.de/brother/
2. Use the HL-2060 driver
3. The driver from Brother

Download http://www.profv.de/brother/Brother-HL-2040-hl1250.ppd and copy the .ppd file to /usr/share/ppd/Brother/ and your HL-2040 should be available via the cups web interface.
